06 Oct Bulk E-Waste Collection in Singapore: How It Works and What to Check First
If you have 20 old laptops in a storeroom, a pile of dead printers, or a rack of retired servers, you already know the problem. Nobody wants to carry that stuff down to a van. The bins at the mall are not built for it. And you can’t just throw it out, because it’s e-waste and it may still hold company data.
This guide explains how bulk e-waste collection works in Singapore, what to prepare before pickup, which mistakes cost people time and money, and how to pick a collector you can trust.
What counts as “bulk” e-waste?
There is no official number. In practice, it means more than you can carry in one or two trips yourself. Most of our bulk jobs look like this:
- An office refresh with 15 to 100 laptops and desktops
- A school or training centre clearing out old computer labs
- A hotel or retail chain replacing TVs, set-top boxes and audio gear
- A company moving premises and clearing storerooms
- An IT team retiring servers, switches, hard disks and UPS units
If you are in that range, a collection service saves you far more time than dropping items off in small batches.
What we collect
At Karung Guni Singapore, we collect a wide range of electronics and related scrap from homes, offices, hotels and schools. For bulk jobs, the common categories are:
- Computers and laptops. Working or spoilt. See our guide on selling spoilt computers in bulk.
- Printers and copiers. Our page on bulk printer disposal for offices covers how to schedule these.
- Servers and IT hardware. Servers, switches, hard disks and power supplies. If yours still have resale value, read how to sell used enterprise servers.
- UPS and power equipment. Old batteries can be a safety risk, so see how to contact UPS power supply buyers.
- TVs, audio gear and home appliances. Including amplifiers, hi-fi sets and DVD players.
- Cables and scrap metal. Copper, aluminium and wiring. Here is a seller’s guide to copper wire scrap.
- Gaming consoles and accessories.
- Medical and industrial equipment. Please message us first so we can check what is possible.
Furniture disposal is also available, but it comes with a fee. Tell us about it up front so the quote is accurate.
Step by step: how bulk collection works
- List what you have. Use our sell page or send a WhatsApp message. A rough count is enough.
- Send photos. A few clear photos of the pile, the labels on servers, or the models of printers help us quote faster. Photos of the storeroom also tell us if we need a trolley or extra hands.
- Get a quote. We usually reply within 2 hours during business hours.
- Pick a time. Once approved, we schedule pickup at a time that suits you. We come to you.
- Collection and payment. Our team loads everything. Where your items have value, you get paid when we collect.
No trips to a warehouse. No renting a lorry.
Does bulk e-waste always earn you money?
No, and any collector who promises that without seeing your items should make you cautious.
Here is the honest picture:
- Newer, working equipment can have real resale value. Business laptops from a few years back and enterprise servers are good examples.
- Mixed, old or broken items usually have low value. Sometimes the value is only in the metal.
- Some items cost money to handle. Furniture is one. Items with a lot of damage or no recyclable material may also fall in this group.
A good collector tells you which category your items fall into before the truck arrives. If you want a quick sense of what a job like yours looks like, our office e-waste collection guide walks through a typical case.
The data problem most people forget
For companies, this matters more than the price.
A laptop sitting in a closet still holds emails, client files, saved passwords and sometimes customer records. Deleting files or “resetting” a device does not always remove everything. If a drive ends up in the wrong hands, your business carries the risk, not the person who took the device.
Before pickup, decide which route fits:
- Wipe the drives yourself using proper data erasure software, and keep a record.
- Remove the drives and keep them for separate destruction.
- Ask for secure destruction. We explain the options in our guide to hard disk destruction in Singapore.
For fleets of laptops, read about corporate laptop recycling. If you are clearing a whole room of servers, the data center decommissioning guide covers the extra planning involved.
If your company has a data protection policy or an IT asset policy, check it before you hand anything over. Some policies require a certificate or written record. Ask for that in advance, not after the truck has left.
What to do before the collection day
A little prep makes pickup faster and your quote more accurate.
- Count and group. Laptops together, printers together, cables together. Even a simple list helps.
- Find the heavy items. Tell us if anything is on an upper floor, in a basement or behind a narrow door.
- Check lift access. Ask building management about goods lift booking and loading bay hours. In many Singapore offices and industrial buildings, you need to book these.
- Tag anything you want to keep. It sounds basic, but items go missing in big clear-outs.
- Handle the data first. Wipe, remove or flag drives before the team arrives.
- Keep batteries and UPS units separate. Swollen or leaking batteries should be pointed out so the team handles them safely.
Common mistakes we see
1. Waiting until storage is full. When the storeroom is packed to the ceiling, it takes longer to sort and load. Smaller, regular pickups are often easier.
2. Mixing e-waste with general rubbish. Once electronics are mixed with food waste or wet items, they are harder to sort and may lose resale value.
3. Assuming “dead” means “worthless.” Spoilt computers and servers can still have value in parts or metal. Do not bin them without asking.
4. Ignoring data on old devices. This is the expensive one. A cheap clear-out can turn into a costly incident.
5. Choosing only on the highest quoted price. A very high number given over the phone, without seeing anything, often drops at the door. Ask what the quote depends on.
6. Forgetting building rules. Missing a lift booking or loading time can delay the whole job.
A note on Singapore’s e-waste rules
Singapore has a regulatory framework for e-waste that puts responsibility on producers and importers of certain products, and it includes a national collection and recycling system for regulated items. Rules and covered product lists can change, so check the National Environment Agency’s website for the current details. For company clear-outs, the practical takeaway is simple: work with a collector who can explain where your items go and who is willing to put the key details in writing.
How to choose a bulk e-waste collector
Ask these questions before you book:
- Will you give me a quote based on photos or a list, and what could change it?
- Do you collect from my building, and do you handle the lift and loading arrangements?
- What happens to hard disks and storage devices?
- Can I get a collection record for my files?
- Are there any items you will charge for?
- Who exactly will come, and when?
If answers are vague, keep looking. A reliable collector answers these without fuss.
